Lakeland, Alpha Pro Tech, Sharps Surge On Ebola Fears

Shares of Lakeland Industries (NASDAQ:LAKE), Alpha Pro Tech (AMEX:APT) and Sharps Compliance (NASDAQ:SMED) are surging on continued fears of the Ebola virus.
Lakeland shares jumped 6.9% to 20.99 in early morning trading in the stock market today, Monday. Alpha Pro Tech surged 14% to 8.48. Sharps Compliance zoomed 15% to 5.58.
All three companies create products designed to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases. Lakeland produces protective clothing such as the ChemMax 1 hazmat suit, while Alpha Pro Tech makes face masks, coveralls and other protective apparel. Sharps sells medical-waste management products such as "sharps" containers for used needles and blades.
Officials have confirmed that a nurse who treated Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan at a Dallas hospital has tested positive for the virus, making it the first known transmission of the deadly disease in the U.S.
Duncan, a recent arrival from Liberia, was the first man to be diagnosed with Ebola in the U.S. He died last week in Dallas.
While the nurse was reportedly wearing protective equipment, officials said there was a "breach of protocol" that resulted in her infection.
Alpha Pro Tech has an IBD EPS Rating of 52, meaning that 48% of all other stocks outperform the company in earnings growth. Sharps Compliance has an EPS Rating of only 17. While the companies' shares are surging now, leading stocks are generally priced above 10 and have an EPS Rating of 80 or higher.
